Hip Replacement: Regaining Freedom of Movement
Hip osteoarthritis is one of the most disabling conditions affecting adults worldwide. When conservative management — physiotherapy, pain relief, injections — no longer provides adequate relief, total hip replacement (THR) offers the prospect of complete pain elimination and restoration of mobility. It is one of the most reliably successful procedures in all of medicine, with patient satisfaction rates consistently exceeding 90 percent.
Turkey’s internationally accredited orthopaedic centres offer total hip replacement to international patients at costs significantly lower than private treatment in Western Europe, performed by surgeons with high-volume experience and supported by modern rehabilitation facilities.
The Procedure
Total hip replacement removes the damaged femoral head and acetabular socket, replacing them with prosthetic components: typically a metal or ceramic femoral head on a metal stem implanted into the femur, and a metal acetabular cup with a plastic or ceramic liner. The procedure is performed under spinal or general anaesthetic and takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
Minimally Invasive Approaches
Modern hip replacement techniques have evolved toward minimally invasive approaches that reduce tissue disruption, blood loss and recovery time. The anterior approach — accessing the hip from the front rather than the side or back — avoids cutting through major muscles and is associated with faster rehabilitation and lower dislocation risk. Several Turkish orthopaedic centres specialise in anterior approach hip replacement.
Implant Systems
Turkey’s leading orthopaedic hospitals use implant systems from globally recognised manufacturers including Zimmer Biomet, Stryker, DePuy and Smith+Nephew. These are identical to the implants used in leading European and American centres.
Recovery
Most patients walk with a physiotherapist’s assistance on the day after surgery. Hospital stay is typically three to five days. For international patients, we recommend remaining in Turkey for ten to fourteen days post-discharge to complete initial physiotherapy before flying home. Full recovery and return to normal activities takes three to six months.
Precautions to avoid hip dislocation (avoiding certain hip positions) are followed for six weeks post-surgery and vary by approach — anterior approach patients have fewer restrictions.
Cost Comparison
Private total hip replacement in Western Europe costs €12,000 to €22,000. In Turkey at a JCI-accredited hospital, the complete procedure including surgery, hospital stay and post-operative care costs €6,000 to €10,000.
