Breast Reduction: A Life-Changing Procedure Often Overlooked in Medical Tourism
While breast augmentation dominates conversations about aesthetic breast surgery, breast reduction — reduction mammaplasty — is frequently cited by patients as among the most impactful and satisfaction-generating procedures in all of plastic surgery. For women whose daily lives are affected by back pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, skin irritation, postural problems or the psychological burden of disproportionately large breasts, surgery offers relief that no other intervention can provide.
Turkey has become a leading destination for breast reduction surgery, with highly experienced plastic surgeons, modern facilities and costs that are typically 50 to 70 percent lower than in Western Europe.
Medical and Functional Indications
Breast reduction is not exclusively an aesthetic procedure. Many patients have genuine medical indications: chronic neck and back pain caused by the weight of large breasts, skin irritation and intertrigo in the inframammary fold, shoulder pain and nerve compression from bra strap pressure, difficulty exercising or engaging in physical activity, and postural consequences including kyphosis. In many countries, these medical indications may entitle patients to partial or full insurance coverage.
The Surgical Techniques
Wise Pattern (Anchor) Reduction
The most commonly used technique for significant reductions. Involves three incisions creating an anchor-shaped pattern: around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the crease. Allows the greatest volume removal and the most comprehensive reshaping. Results in three scars that typically fade significantly over one to two years.
Vertical (Lollipop) Reduction
Omits the horizontal incision along the crease, resulting in two scars (around the areola and vertically down). Suitable for moderate reductions with good skin elasticity. Produces excellent shape with less scarring than the anchor technique.
Periareolar (Donut) Reduction
A single circular incision around the areola. Suitable only for minor reductions. Less commonly used for significant volume reduction due to limited access.
Recovery
Breast reduction recovery is typically straightforward. Most patients are comfortable at rest within 48 hours. A supportive surgical bra is worn for six weeks. Most patients return to desk work within one to two weeks. Upper body exercise should be avoided for six weeks. The final shape settles at three to six months, and scars continue to mature for twelve to eighteen months.
Combining with a Breast Lift
Breast reduction inherently includes a lift — the procedure reshapes and elevates the breast tissue and repositions the nipple-areola complex simultaneously. Patients who wish to reduce volume and address ptosis (sagging) need only one operation.
Cost in Turkey
Breast reduction in Western Europe costs €5,000 to €12,000. In Turkey at an accredited clinic, the procedure costs €2,500 to €5,500 all-inclusive. Dr.Visor works with verified plastic surgeons specialising in breast surgery. Begin your consultation at drvisor.com.
